NBA 2K23 has always been a divisive part of the franchise. Much of this has to do with some in the community expressing frustration with the issue of upgrading MyPlayers to work in The City/Neighborhood and MyCareer. In response to this issue, some are advocating for change through the hashtag #Make2KFree on Twitter.

Over the past 24 hours, many NBA 2K23 players on social media have expressed dissatisfaction with the state of NBA 2K23. This anxiety is mainly due to the VC (Virtual Currency) cost required to upgrade the MyPlayer build. In NBA 2K23, each level upgrade of a character in MyCareer has a cost. Users have to pay that fee to get the highest rating for a particular build.
VC can be obtained through in-game achievements, or purchased in the 2K market. However, the cost required to unlock the 99 OVR player has been a bone of contention in 2K23. As we mentioned in our review of NBA 2K23, the cost of fully upgrading MyPlayer to 99 OVR requires more VC than in the past. The build of 99 OVR in 2K23 cost almost $100 in VC to accomplish this task.
Microtransactions have been a staple of sports games for years, thanks to CCG game modes like Madden Ultimate Team and NBA 2K's MyTeam. Will this change? It sure doesn't look like that. But will NBA 2K really be free to play in the future? It's not a far-fetched proposition, but it would require 2K to remove the $70 price point it was prepared to receive from consumers each year.
