Once you have found an apartment that you love and you are ready to move in, it is time to get all of your stuff moved into the apartment. Before you unpack all the boxes you have brought with you (and it probably feels like a million boxes), you need to do a complete walkthrough of the place with your landlord. Have them mark down any issues that they see with the apartment and then hold onto this sheet to refer back to when it is time for you to move out.

You want to look out for some of the issues that the landlord may try to pin on you and take out of your security deposit when you move out. Noting these problems now, and getting some of the major ones fixed, will help out quite a bit when you move out and want to get the money back. A few of the things you should look for include:

# Any scratches on the floorboards or the wooden floors.

# Any marks or issues with discoloration on the walls

# Holes or chipped paint in the walls

# Signs that there are pests (you should ask the landlord to work on this before you move in)

# Any signs of mildew and mold around the unit.

# Cracks that show up in the tile that you are concerned about.

# Lack of water pressure in any of the rooms and toilets that do not flush

# Check the location of all the smoke detectors and then test them before moving in.

# Problems with the locks on the windows and doors and whether the security system is working

# The outlets in the property. Check the location, how many are present, and whether they work.

# Any cracks or chips that are present in the windows of the rental

# See if you can open the windows. It is not a good thing if you can’t

# Blinds that do not work or are broken.

# Stains that are on the carpets at all.

No matter the type of apartment you want to make your own, it is a good idea to do a walkthrough of the place and make sure that it is in good order and that nothing that isn’t your fault is put on your record when you move out.
