Welcome to a new edition of Maintenance Monday by ePoolSupply. Every week, we love sharing useful tips and tricks related to the pool industry. This week, we'll cover pool lights and how to safely replace a pool light bulb. Owning a pool can be quite confusing, but having someone by your side to guide you through each step of the process is helpful. Let's get started!

Why should you replace a pool light bulb?

We've seen it all: burnt-out bulbs, broken glass, and lens stains that can give you nightmares. Over time, age and usage play a significant role in the performance of your pool lights. Whether you're replacing a broken pool light bulb or upgrading to an energy-efficient LED color-changing light bulb, this guide will take you through each step of the process.

Steps:

  1. Turn off the power to the light fixture. Use a multimeter to test the wiring to ensure there is NO incoming power in the line. After testing, retest the line and toggle the switch on and off to further ensure the power is off.
  2. Remove the pilot screw from outside the pool. Most lights use a Phillips screwdriver, but we recommend using a longer/larger screwdriver to grip older, worn screws.
  3. Wiggle the light out of the wall fixture. Some debris may fall out behind the light, so don't worry. Most installers will disconnect the cable from the light so you can bring the light to the pool deck. Place one of your towels down to avoid damaging the lens.
  4. Partially dry the pool if the light cable doesn't reach the pool deck, making it easier to work on the light without being fully submerged.
  5. Test the wires if applicable to ensure no power is coming through the line.
  6. Disassemble the light fixture. Most lights will use a spring clamp to hold the lens. Pay close attention to how it comes apart so you can easily reassemble the fixture.
  7. Carefully remove the old light bulb. Towels come in handy if the bulb shatters or breaks in any way.
  8. Clean and dry the inside of the fixture as much as possible.
  9. Install the new light bulb gently. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN THE BULB!
  10. Test the light on the deck. Briefly turn on the power and visually check if the new light bulb is working correctly. Do not leave the bulb out of water for too long as it will overheat. TURN OFF THE POWER AGAIN AFTER TESTING THE LIGHT!
  11. Assemble the light fixture and spring clamp assembly to ensure a tight seal.
  12. Check for leaks by submerging the light in the pool. Look for any air bubbles escaping around the lens and gasket area. If you see any air leaks, disassemble the fixture and start again from step 8 by cleaning and drying the fixture.
  13. Once you've determined the fixture is sealed, wrap the cable gently around the fixture and install it into the wall.
  14. Secure the light with the pilot screw or light wedge.
  15. Turn on the power and test the light one last time!
