In a recent interview with 4Gamer (translated from Nintendo Everything), Triangle Strategy producer Tomoya Asano talked about the aesthetic of the graphics and the ways it's implemented in the future games of the company D2R Ladder Items. The interviewer was shocked that more indie titles haven't taken on the same design, Asano revealed the reason being that it's pretty expensive!
"It's definitely worth noting that it's priced higher than you'd think. In that respect, it's a good match for the titles want out of Square Enix. There's probably nothing to gain from other companies copying it," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately this cost won't stop Square Enix from releasing more games that are similar to this.
The remake version of Live a Live is set to launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch in July, as a remake of Dragon Quest III is currently being developed. There are a number of other games which could benefit from this style and it will be fascinating to discover how Square Enix does with HD-2D next. Although the company has evidently committed to this style of graphic, Asano went on to declare that there isn't a present "definitive Bible," and it will be evolving according to the game.
"We aren't putting together anything similar to this. The way the plot is presented varies in each movie, which means that the HD-2D flavor will be slightly different every time. When you play Live A Live for example the mood in the prehistoric scene will be different from the sci-fi story.
Our expression options have expanded thanks to the latest ideas we've devised. "While it may be prohibitive for certain developers, HD-2D has clearly become a nexus point for many gamers. It is our hope that we will continue to observe Square Enix find new ways to extend the style as well as a host of other games to come!
