The Bay of Islands is one of those places that seems like it was made for adventure and relaxation in equal measure. The first time I visited, I only planned a couple of activities but quickly realised there was so much more to see and do. From sailing to snorkelling, here’s my guide to some of the best bay of islands activities.
1. Dolphin Watching and Cruises
One of my absolute favourite experiences was hopping on a dolphin-watching tour. There’s something magical about seeing these incredible creatures up close, leaping out of the water alongside the boat. Many tours also take you to the iconic Hole in the Rock, which is another must-see.
2. Explore Russell’s Rich History
A visit to Russell isn’t complete without learning about its past. Take a stroll through the town centre and stop by the historic church and museum. It’s humbling to see how this once-rowdy port town transformed into the peaceful paradise it is today.
3. Kayaking and Paddleboarding
For a more active adventure, renting a kayak or paddleboard is a great way to explore the coastline. I spent an afternoon paddling around the bays, stopping at quiet beaches for a bit of relaxation. If you’re new to kayaking, many rental places offer guided tours.
4. Hiking the Bay of Islands
If you’re up for a hike, there are trails around the area offering stunning views. One of the most memorable walks I’ve done started just outside Russell and took me through native bushland to a lookout with panoramic views of the bay.
5. Island Hopping Adventures
Don’t miss the chance to explore some of the smaller islands. I once joined a sailing tour that stopped at a secluded spot where we had a BBQ lunch. There’s something about eating with the ocean as your backdrop that makes everything taste better.
6. Fishing Charters
For those keen on fishing, the Bay of Islands is famous for it. I’m not much of a fisherman myself, but a mate of mine swears it’s the best fishing he’s ever done. Even if you don’t reel in the biggest catch, being out on the water is worth it.
7. Relaxation and Beaches
Sometimes, the best activity is no activity at all. Whether it’s Long Beach in Russell or one of the many hidden bays, lounging on the sand with a good book is a perfect way to unwind.
Plan Your Stay Wisely
The beauty of the Bay of Islands is that you can mix adventure with downtime. Choose accommodation close to the activities you’re most interested in to save time, and don’t cram too much into one day—there’s so much to savour here.
Every time I leave the Bay of Islands, I feel a bit reluctant to return to normal life. It’s a place that stays with you long after you’ve gone. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, the activities on offer ensure there’s always something new to discover.
