When Blizzard launched World of Warcraft Classic, the game's creator had no idea that it would be the success that it has become. The creator thought that returning to the OG WoW would be something that would appeal to fans of the game, but it wasn't much more than the fans that it has attracted. It turned out that this wasn't the case and the game has become massive, with an update, The Burning Crusade, coming this year.

The executive producer John Hight told P2Pah at BlizzConline that the WoW Classic community WoW Classic is "as large" as the current WoW community, however, the producer declined to provide additional details regarding specific numbers when asked. However, it's evident that WoW Classic has been a massive success, and has changed the way Blizzard as a studio approach the ongoing process of development as well as support.
