Temporary Storage

Plan ahead and reserve storage containers and/or storage units. Service providers such as Pods.com will allow you to pack a storage container that will be left in your current residential driveway for a period of time. They will then move the storage container to your new residence and pick up the empty unit at a later date. I used Pods.com when we moved and had a great experience. We placed our lawn tractor, outdoor furniture, seasonal items, and many boxes in the unit.

You can also use other temporary storage. If you need to remove some items from your home for showings and do not want a storage container in your driveway, check your area for temporary storage. Your home will be less cluttered for showings, and your moving day will be focused on the more important items. Be sure to get more than one estimate.

Helpful Hint: Short-term temporary storage can be a valuable piece of the moving puzzle. Try to set a limit on how long you will use the facility. The fees can add up quickly.

 

 

 

 

Change of Address

Before you move, contact each of the following businesses, government offices, and your personal contacts. Provide an effective date and your new address. You may be able to do some of this online. Some financial and government offices may want you to make the change in person. If you are moving out of the area, be sure to make changing your address a priority. The UPS Store may have mailboxes you can rent temporarily if the need arises. For friends and family, it may help them if you list both your new and old address on a postcard especially if they live out of state or are older.
