Niacin, also known as nicotinic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin whose derivatives, such as NADH, NAD, NAD+, and NADP, are essential for DNA repair as well as energy metabolism in living cells. Niacin is an organic form of Vitamin B3. It is widely available in both whole and processed foods, with fortified packaged foods, meat, poultry, and red fish like tuna and salmon having the highest concentrations.

Nuts, legumes, and seeds have lower concentrations. In the industrial production process, an excess of nitric acid is used to oxidise 5-ethyl-2-methylpyridine in an aqueous solution to nicotinic acid in a single-tube reactor. The continuous process occurs at a temperature between 230°C and 270 °C.

The main exporters in the market of niacin are India, Mexico, Peru, Russia, Ukraine, Uruguay, and the United States.
