The global scanning probe microscope market is anticipated to grow at a considerable CAGR of 7.2% during the forecast period (2023-2030). The scanning probe microscope (SPM) techniques compared to optical methods is the ability to obtain height information and the unique capability of obtaining images at atomic resolution. SPM allows many geometrical details to be extracted at a very detailed level. The proliferation and development of seminal SPM technology have produced a wide variety of dual-probe implementations of SPMs.

For instance, in June 2022, Hitachi High-Tech Corp. announced the launch of the AFM100 Pro high-sensitivity scanning probe microscope system, a high-end scanning probe microscope (AFM*1/SPM*2) equipped with a newly developed high-sensitivity optical head that improves sensitivity when measuring physical properties and enables measurement at atomic and molecular scales. A scanning probe microscope can be used to observe the shape and evaluate the physical characteristics of high polymer materials, battery materials, and nanomaterials, and can address a variety of issues with respect to nanotechnology and nanoscience. With conventional instruments, however, experience and specialized knowledge are required to make optical adjustments and set the observation conditions.

For instance, in February 2021, Shimadzu introduces the SPM-Nanoa scanning probe microscope that provides high-level operability and high-speed processing, with automated optical adjustments and observation conditions settings. It will contribute to the evaluation of, and research into, cutting-edge nanomaterials as a mid-range scanning probe microscope (SPM). Advanced material research in recent years has demanded measurement technologies that can visualize carrier dynamics when quantum structures are optically excited. Further, in January 2023, UNISOKU announced the development of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) that achieves ultrafast time-resolved measurements at the nanoscale. UNISOKU collaborated with Professor HidemiShigekawa and his team from the Department of Applied Physics, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences at the University of Tsukuba to develop a time-resolved STM system by combining the optical pump-probe method and STM.
