The Lions went into their "Sunday Night Football" game against the Packers with little for which to play. The Seahawks had beaten the Rams in overtime in their 4:25 p.m. ET game to guarantee that even with a win, the Lions wouldn't go to the playoffs. So, Detroit could only play the role of spoiler against Green Bay and for the consolation prize of the franchise's first winning record since 2017.Even still, Dan Campbell's bunch came into the game motivated to win. As a result, the game was tight throughout. Neither team led by more than six points, and the game seesawed back and forth in the second half.MORE:Ultimately, Campbell's Lions upset the Packers 20-16. That denied Green Bay a playoff appearance while gifting one to the Seahawks. The Lions' effort was strong, but how, exactly, did they earn the win? It was predicated largely on a strong performance late in the fourth quarter. The Sporting News lists the key points. They were on their own 25 with 13:58 left in the fourth quarter. It seemed as if the drive would come to an end seven plays in. The Lions were facing a fourth-and-2 at the Packers' 22. At that point, it seemed as though Detroit would settle for a game-tying field goal and rely on its defense to come up with another stop against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. But Campbell took an aggre sive approach and went for it. A new single-season record! gives Detroit the lead.: on NBC: Stream on NFL+ NFL (@NFL) The short run made Williams the Lions' all-time single-season leader in total touchdowns with 17. He had tied Barry Sanders' record of 16 earlier in the night. It's important to note that this touchdown was enabled, in part, by Quay Walker being ejected. The Packers linebacker was to sed after who came onto the field to tend to the injured D'Andre Swift.MORE:The Packers were not as effective without Walker on the field, and his presence was certainly mi sed on Williams' run. Williams' touchdown was Dymonte Thomas Jersey far from a game-clincher. The Packers still had 5:55 and three timeouts remaining to mount a comeback, so the Lions were faced with the task of stopping Aaron Rodgers. They handled it just fine.Green Bay gained just 12 yards on six plays following the touchdown. The Lions then got the ball back when Kerby Joseph intercepted a deep pa s by Rodgers.Rodgers was under pre sure and had to chuck the ball up on third-and-10 to try to make a play. Joseph was able to run under the ball and make a return to flip the field.KERBY JOSEPH. HIS THIRD INT OF RODGERS THIS YEAR.: on NBC: Stream on NFL+ NFL (@NFL) The interception was, incredibly, the third in Joseph's two games against Rodgers during his rookie season. This one set the Lions' offense up to try to burn the clock with 3:27 left.Of course, the Packers still had all of their timeouts, so the Lions would need to generate first downs to seal the game. The Lions appeared to get off to a rocky start when Goff threw a pa s to Amon-Ra St. Brown that appeared to fall incomplete. However, a closer look at the play revealed that St. Brown had managed to corral the ball before it hit the ground. He used his legs to keep it off the turf before catching it in his lap as Packers safety Darnell Savage fought for it.That was a catch!? : on NBC: Stream on NFL+ NFL (@NFL) That reception put the Lions on the brink of field-goal range. They were at least guaranteed a field-goal opportunity to add to their four-point lead.MORE: The Lions picked up another first down shortly after St. Brown's catch, but they quickly found themselves behind the chains.Detroit was facing a second-and-17 Jourdan Lewis Jersey with 2:17 left, but now Green Bay was out of timeouts. That meant the clock would only stop for the two-minute warning and a first down would ice the game.Of course, the Lions didn't want to run a downfield pa sing play and risk an incompletion, so instead, Campbell and Johnson dialed up a trick play that worked to perfection.Goff dumped off a short pa s to St. Brown. As Packers tacklers swarmed to him, he lateraled to Swift. The running back took it for a gain of 14 to set up a third-and-3.THIS PLAY CALL : on NBC: Stream on NFL+ NFL (@NFL) That play did two things for the Lions. First, it ensured they would have a chance to convert a short third-down run to ice the game. Second, it put the Lions in range for Ben Braden Jersey a makeable field goal that could extend their lead to seven if they couldn't get the first down.In short, the play gave the Lions options, and they were able to mull them at the two-minute warning. The Lions ultimately chose to run the ball on third-and-3 and came up a yard short of the first down. But rather than kick the field goal, Campbell took the gutsy approach again. The second-year coach kept his offense on the field and called a pa s play with 1:14 left. Just as he had on the earlier fourth down, Goff found Chark to convert. That clinched the victory for Detroit.GOFF. CHARK. GAME OVER. NFL (@NFL) Other coaches may have taken a conservative approach, but Campbell stuck to his aggre sive principles. They allowed Detroit to pull off the upset and send the Packers packing.MORE:Certainly, the Lions faithful will be thanking Campbell for organizing a 9-8 season that ended with a late-season playoff push following a 1-6 start. But perhaps no fan base will be more thankful than Seattle's, which now gets to go to the playoffs over Green Bay.
